As An Older Adult, Are You Prepared For Hurricane Season In Clearwater?
Summer along the Gulf Coast means a heightened risk of hurricanes. They pose a threat from early June throughout the fall, but late summer tends to be the most active part of hurricane season. Storm watches and warnings are routinely issued and raise alarms among Clearwater residents.
Older adults in particular need to be mindful of hurricane safety. Our Clearwater elder law attorney explains more about common issues impacting seniors during hurricane season and recommends tips to help prepare and protect yourself.
Common Issues That Impact the Safety of Older Adults During Hurricane Season
According to the latest U.S. Census statistics, nearly 40 percent of the population in Pinellas County is age 60 or older. Older adults in Clearwater generally live active, healthy lives. However, some common issues accompany the aging process, which can create potentially serious problems, particularly during hurricane season. These include:
- Serious illnesses, such as cancer, Parkinson’s, and Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disease (COPD), which regular treatment;
- Chronic health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney failure, and diabetes;
- Limited mobility due to arthritis, stenosis, and other conditions;
- Limited hearing or vision, impacting the ability to drive;
- Dementia and general cognitive declines;
- Increased dependence on medications and medical devices.
In addition to dealing with the above, some older adults are widowed or otherwise have little family in our area. All of these factors can jeopardize their safety throughout the year, but particularly during hurricane season.
Clearwater Hurricane Tips For Older Adults
Managing illnesses and chronic health conditions, dealing with limited mobility or cognitive disorders, and not having friends or family in the area can all complicate your life and any hurricane preparations. - Get copies of your driver’s license, birth certificate, Social Security card, and other important documents;
- Make a list of important numbers, including your doctor, local caregivers, and family or friends;
- Monitor local weather forecasts and be aware of any storms in our area;
- Fill your vehicle up with gas, be aware of evacuation routes, or make other travel arrangements;
- Consider where you would stay and who might be able to help if you have to leave your home;
- Make a hurricane kit, containing enough food and water for 72 hours, a flashlight, radio, and batteries.
