If I enter a nursing home as a private pay resident, do I have to use my assets before I can get Medicaid?

Not necessarily. There are a number of strategies that Medicaid will allow us to use to bring your assets down to a level where you will qualify for Medicaid immediately without dissipating all your assets. Also, some assets are not going to be a problem in the first place. You’re allowed to own a car, you’re allowed to own a house. So, those kind of things don’t make any difference in the first place. But if you’re over-asset in terms of financial assets, you need to consult with an attorney to see what you can do to bring those numbers down without spending it all on nursing home care.
